ALEX JIABAO ZHANG

Alex is a penultimate-year law student at Murdoch University and a paralegal in the Projects Disputes team at Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

Prior to commencing her law degree, she was the youngest court Mandarin interpreter certified by the Judicial Council of California. As a court interpreter, Alex worked with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and worked closely with the US State and Federal public defenders in challenging matters such as deportations, mental health issues and crime.

Alex is passionate about social justice and human rights, she has volunteered at the Fremantle Community Legal Centre, where she worked in tenancy, child protection and domestic violence matters. Alex also volunteered as a homework mentor at the Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre helping children in their first few years of settlement in Australia.

Having moved to Australia in March 2020 during the pandemic, Alex found many unique challenges in job-hunting. As such, she is committed to assisting her peers and colleagues through her involvement in the AALA as a Student Affairs Subcommittee member.
