YI (CASS) CHEN

Cass is a final-year law student at Deakin University and an international student with a Chinese background who embarked on her journey to Australia in 2018. She is passionate about corporate law and aspires to build an international career. While her final year of study has been a rollercoaster of caffeine-fueled late nights and existential crises, her interests extend beyond academics—to culture, diversity, and the stories that shape her identity as a first-generation Chinese Australian.

Cultural awareness has been a defining thread in her journey, from advocating for Asian culture on stage at the NGV during the 2024 Lunar New Year to finding a sense of belonging in AALA, where her values align with its mission to promote cultural diversity in the legal profession. Cass is grateful for the opportunities and platform that AALA provides to connect with legal professionals and students of Asian backgrounds. She looks forward to contributing her efforts to the community.

The Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA) offers our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the true and traditional owners and custodians of the lands we gather on to live, work and learn.

AALA acknowledges the past and continuing trauma caused by mistreatment and displacement. AALA celebrates and shares in the respect for elders, land and community and continues to advocate for intersectional diversity and the empowerment of all first nations peoples worldwide.
