MEDIA RELEASE - From Grief to Action: AALA Response to Bondi tragedy

The Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA) community are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific act of violence that occurred at Bondi Beach last Sunday, during the first night of Hanukkah celebrations. We condemn in the strongest terms all forms of hate-fuelled violence driven by prejudice.

On behalf of the Asian Australian legal community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those whose lives were tragically taken, and our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this horrific act.

We stand in solidarity with the Australian Jewish community, and with all Australian communities impacted by hate. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to a just, safe, and inclusive Australia where no one lives in fear because of their identity, belief, or background. As members of the legal profession, we have a responsibility to speak out against all forms of discrimination. Every person deserves to live in dignity, free from violence and prejudice.

Belinda Wong, National President, states: Now more than ever, we must all stand up for the rule of law, for community safety, and seek to roll back the rising tide of hate. We must commit to using our voices and our values to build a better future.

Michael Tangonan, NSW President, states: Hatred does not build nor assist community. It is the prejudice that underlies all forms of malevolent discrimination and has no place in the better future we aspire for our children and future generations to enjoy.

We also recognise that this tragedy raises broader questions about community safety. As a national legal organisation committed to justice and the rule of law, AALA calls for renewed national attention to meaningful gun reform, and urges policymakers to take action to protect all communities from hate-fuelled violence.
